Why We Did It
This project was inspired by what many believe to be one of the most brilliant campaigns of the last half of the last century: the re-introduction of the Volkswagen Beetle. Perfect timing. Wonderful engineering. Unmistakable styling. But, with all this, there was one thing missing. The one thing (other than its shape) that for over five decades was the defining characteristic of the Volkswagen Beetle: The Sound.

The Beetles used in this recording were selected for very specific reasons. In particular, the different engines produced rather distinctive sounds. The 1960 Beetle used here was the original 1200cc engine (with a mighty 36 hp), which we found to be representative of the “Beetle“ sound of the 1100, 1200 and 1300cc engines. Next, we chose to focus on the 1600cc: we used a 1973 - powder blue. Then a big change came in 1975 with the addition of fuel injection: the one used here is a 1978 convertible.

This project is dedicated to Beetle owners, old and new.
